When Good Actors Star In Bad Movies

Or perhaps the title should be, WHAT WAS HE THINKING? All film fans have followed a favorite actor or actress through their career with hopeful expectation. This usual ends up in hours of pleasurable entertainment. However, there are those moments, those cringe worthy minutes, when the movie is so shockingly bad you can’t believe your favorite actor would do such a thing. Its almost like a character flaw and takes some incredible comeback efforts to reverse.

We could make a strong case for Robert DeNiro in several Ben Stiller films, but this might not be the time or place for that. Instead lets go directly for the heart of it, here are three bad films with good actors we can only ask WHY?

Nicholas Cage in “Ghostrider” – While everyone is taking a ride on the comic book train they don’t always work. This one should have been left on the pages. So stiff and slow even the actors weren’t buying it.

Johnny Depp and John Turturro in “Secret Window” – There are elements here for good story telling. A decent cast and a master pulp writer just didn’t add up to a good film. It must be asked, What was Johnny thinking? He read this script and said yes which makes the audience wonder…..

Kevin Costner in “Tin cup” – a strong case could be made to add the past few movie choices for Mr. Costner, but given his small great roles, this one leaves us scratching our heads. After the first few scenes its evident this film is going no where and doesn’t mind how long it takes to get there. Beautiful vistas alone cannot hold a movie together. As often is the case, Ms. Rene Russo does a fine job and Mr. Costner sort of appears to act.
