Star Trek vs. Star Wars, is a debate that has been discussed by passionate fans of both franchises since the 70′s. Star Trek’s original series has been around since 1966 and there have been eleven feature films, not to mention books and comics. The first of the three original Star Wars movie was released in 1977. There have been six movies all together. Some Star Trek fans say that since it was created first and had more movies and television series, it is superior. The question this argument raises; does quantity equal quality? Not really. Star Trek fans, or trekkies, are typically fanatical in their following of the franchise. So much so that there has been a documentary about the culture of trekkies. One could argue there are just as many dedicated fans of Star Wars. Hard core fans, often referred to fanboys, were the subject of a hilarious movie actually titled Fanboys. In the movie a group of friends travel to George Lucas’s home to try and sneak a peek of the unreleased Episode One. An undisputed, clear winner of this debate will never be agreed upon. The mere idea of what makes a movie or franchise great is subjective. However, the Star Wars franchise seems to have made a more significant impression on American culture. Star Wars should be the clear winner even though not everyone would agree.
